Europe2020 strategy is pushing to create a favorable climate for social enterprises recognized as key stakeholders in the social economy and innovation. Social enterprises seek to serve the community’s interest (social, societal, environmental objectives) rather than profit maximization. They often have an innovative nature, through the goods or services they offer, and through the organization or production methods they resort to. As many affect some of society’s most fragile members (socially excluded persons), they contribute to social cohesion, employment and the reduction of inequalities.

Two cornerstones of social entrepreneurship are: i) the ever-increasing need for social services, for example in the health and nursing sectors — due not least to the demographic changes arising as a consequence of an increasingly ageing society; ii) the potential of social ventures to increase global competitiveness with new jobs, which are mainly to be found in the ‘green’ and ‘white’ economy. The seminar - organized within the activities of the EU FP7 Web-COSI project – aims to explore the policy implications that have arisen thus far in the context of data usage for driving social entrepreneurship. Data needs for social entrepreneurs can be considered in different perspectives: i) data on the citizens’ problems and needs to drive the start of the social venture; ii) data to foster the venture on-going; iii) data to evaluate and measure the impact of social ventures; iv) data to measure the overall phenomenon of social entrepreneurship. Web2.0 offers great potential to collect and use data among stakeholders and in giving individuals a voice. Technology lowers the cost of and barriers to listening to individuals and disadvantaged communities. It assists responding to their needs, and aggregating large amounts of data to measure overall effectiveness and shape policy interventions. The seminar aims at exploring digital initiatives set up to foster the interaction between citizens and social entrepreneurs. It will draw from work already undertaken by the Web-COSI project, including the outcomes of a Workshop in London, a Report and mapping exercise, an online survey and preparations being made for a series of focus groups.

Organiser: NetHood and UnMonastery

‘unSmarting the City’ is a workshop organized in collaboration between NetHood (Panayotis Antoniadis, Ileana Apostol) and UnMonastery (Katalin Hausel, Jeff Andreoni) in order to explore the advantages of offline networks and smart city concepts for the design of technology that can serve face-to-face meetings and local communities. We will first provide a short introduction to three important concepts that will help us guide the workshop participants through a collaborative process of hybrid space design: Do-It-Yourself networking, field research methodologies, and the role of the stranger. Then we will go out to the streets to explore the surroundings of the conference’s venue to analyze the spatial and social aspects of different places, and to identify locations that are candidates for hybrid urban interventions. After our collective walk, we will gather in a public space to think together about possible applications and possible processes to design them, including software, hardware, surrounding artifacts and performance. We will focus on ways to take advantage of the special characteristics of DIY networking — ownership, de facto physical proximity, anonymity, and inclusive access — to facilitate contact between strangers, in this specific part of the city. The next day, July 8th, we will join the “From the IoT to the IoC” workshop, and afterwards we will develop all together a few prototypes of selected applications. Finally, we will perform a short-term urban intervention in a selected location in the city, and close this way the whole design circle (from field research to intervention).

A panel comprising the members of the SciCafe Consortium will present the management challenges relating to open data and social innovation partnerships in the context of Social innovation eco-systems governance, fostering crowd-sourced innovation and support the mainstreaming of the 3rd sector innovation eco-systems - crowd-funding beyond community currencies

This will explore the related aspects such as invitational environments to motivate objective citizenship and collective-deliberative democracy, enhancing the quality of the user experience in x-cafés in the context of specific social constructs, managing innovation communities beyond the digital social innovation platform, studying the socio-psycho-cognitive pull-push in peer production, challenging socially constructed “cool” irresponsibility.

We will hear about the best examples of open policy from the EU and beyond, and develop some practical ideas to make the processes and attitudes of government ready for digital participation and citizen engagement.

“During a hands-on encounter, we envision together what the future can be at the cross-section of our expertise. The overall project will address various questions of which one or more are explored. Overall, I’m intrigued to hear what kind of world the inspirator foresees or prefers to create tomorrow and in a few decades. How can people learn from each other and prefer to work together? What can be the role of the inspirator’s discipline as well as other disciplines? How do we boost the potential and passion of every human being? How will technology influence our society? What are the ethical implications of our innovations? And what can design offer in the process of creating our future together?

By sketching this future together and creating a joined vision, I aim at bridging different worlds and perspectives, in action. Through this encounter, I like to discuss my perspective on the world through embodied perpection-inspired designs from our DQI group (dep. of Industrial Design, TU Eindhoven) and other design work; I like to inspire the inspirators by revealing what design could bring. Vice-versa, I like to be inspired by them; their dreams, ideals, passion and experience. Moreover, I like to introduce them to the ideas and vision of the other inspirators. This way I hope all participants get new insights and can grow, which might even create potential ground for further collaboration to realize our ideals and envisioned future. Finally, all encounters are recorded on video, audio and in a database with all materials used including time-marked highlights, and documented in a blog, a book and a movie, thus hoping to inspire others in their work and perspective on the world”

We are makers of building blocks for systems of decision-making. What does collective awareness of this Digital Transition, fueled by Internet of Things, mean? How can we ensure that this future full of sensors will not only be in the hands of commercial companies wanting just to make money and engineers who are only able to out-optimize in their narrow reductions of the real? One possible trajectory is to take over the memes and terminology in order to envisage futures where sensors and monitoring are harnessed in a scale that can be managed on the ground by people just living their everyday life; the neighborhood. Can we rethink the smart city as an internet of communities where local platforms gather all public and private data streams in a local decentralized cloud and play back scenarios to people on food, sharing cars, local work, tools and services? How can we bring back the technology to serve real simple and mundane needs of people and their immediate allies: animals, plants and the environment as a whole?

The format aims to quickly identify the dilemma, the stakeholders, the incentives for the stakeholders to participate in possible solutions to the dilemma you want to propose, the evidence you have prepared and researched to underly your suggestion that there is a dilemma in the first place and that this dilemma is the most urgent one and most important ‘tools for evidence'; that is tools that allow the stakeholders to construct evidentiary rationales for themselves. In short if you do not give people in current times tools (ranging from apps, to experiences in installations, software..) to construct their own evidence, you will have a very difficult time in trying to underline the importance of your dilemma.
